I believe in Robert Kiyosaki’s lament when he mentioned in his book Rich Dad, Poor Dad that “The difference between being broke and being poor is that being broke is temporary, while being poor is eternal.”
Disclaimer: Poverty is a huge topic I believe. There are numbers of factors that make someone conclude that he is poor; lack of education, the environment he grew up with, how he was taught etc and my knowledge will not suffice to discuss it.
Being poor is a state of mind
The “no money” situation doesn’t make one poor. If he managed to keep his character and hold on to what he knows he’s capable of doing then he’s only broke, still hoping for the “glorious days”. Tomorrow this broke guy will get up on his feet again and try. He might fall back down again and again but he will keep trying.
Along the way people might tease, make fun of or push him around and tell him to just give up, but his character and hopes will remain, he will not be discouraged. It might take him a lifetime to reach his goals or he may die not achieving it, but then again he knew he tried. And it is in the trying and testing that make a man rich. On the other hand it is in hopelessness and disbelief in one’s self that make one poor.
Who wants to be poor anyway.
There are those of us who once in our lives must have taught that we are poor. Maybe because we are always broke and are lacking in resources. However, we have in our subconscious mind the desire to get out of that miserable situation. I believe this is where the problem lies; because the desire to get out of poverty was left in the subconscious part of the mind alone, never do we dig into it.
Be poor no more.
Dust yourself off, it’s time to dig into it! How? Read on
Learn your identity.
The manner of how we treat others most of the time depends on who they are, or how we see them. For example: We tend to be more respectful to prominent people in our society than towards our “ordinary” neighbors. Knowing who you are will affect how you treat your self and how you would want to be treated. There are those who have found their real self through God while there are others who have found their real selves by careful observation of life.
Believe in yourself.
Part of learning your identity is learning what you are capable of, believe in your self and in what you can do. If you believe that poverty is a state of mind then a positive thought towards yourself is very crucial. Your activities will depend on your self confidence. The more you believe your self, the more effort you will exert and the more successful you are going to be.
Cultivate your good qualities and use them for your advancement.
Like going in a war, getting out of poverty needs preparations. The two practices above are for your mental preparations, you will need to physically equip yourself as well. You can do this by;
- Educating your self through reading good books
- Attending seminars that will enhance your skills
- Surrounding your self with successful and big minded people
- Reading blog posts like this
It’s not always going to be easy getting out of a poor situation but it is always going to be worth it. It’s going to be a rough ride but at the same time exciting. Keep your goals in mind and be consistent with your efforts. There will be bumps ahead that might hurt you but that’s where the learning take place. Keep the faith, never look back and always move forward.
